Interview 2008

Q: When did you first get involved in photography?
I have always enjoyed taking pictures. I think the first camera I used belonged to my parents, it was an instamatic with disposable flash bulbs but I don’t remember taking any ‘good’ photos with it. My first introduction to SLR cameras was when my father bought one and began taking classes at the local TAFE, but I didn’t get into it myself until a couple of years later when I took photography at school. We used basic Konica Minolta 35mm SLR cameras with 50mm lenses and developed our own film and prints. I did get some good grades for photography despite having a grumpy and unhelpful teacher.

Q: How did your photography evolve from there?
A few years later I had saved up enough and purchased a Canon EOS 500N an 18-55mm F4.5 and a 70-300mm F5.6 telephoto lens and various other equipment, and used this quite a bit with varied results. I did produce some great photos but didn’t do much with them. In early 2006 I upgraded to a Canon EOS 350D digital camera and my learning curve increased greatly due to not having to keep a written record of my settings (which I was never very good at). I started publishing my work on the internet and traveled quite a bit during this time, continuously reading and developing my technique. Finally I upgraded to a Canon EOS 40D and good quality fast lenses in early 2008 and am continuously trying to learn and develop my style.

Q: What style would you like to learn next?
I have been experimenting more with street photography lately. It is a subject I’ve always been interested in, but is hard to do well because your often putting yourself right in front of your subject in plain view. It can be intimidating at times, but the more you do it the more comfortable you become. Besides from that I would like to do more studio photography and work with strobes and other lighting equipment.

Q: What is your biggest weakness as a photographer?
Record keeping and remembering lighting conditions would have to be my biggest fault. But being color-blind makes it difficult as I have to try and compensate when I develop my photos, I’m not sure how well I do in that respect.

Q: What do you do when your not taking photographs
I work as a Registered Nurse in a metropolitan hospital, and am working towards a Masters Degree in Public Health and Tropical Medicine. When I’m not working, I’m either spending time with the family or taking photographs. I do enjoy a good book and outdoor activities too.
